Bots are simply computer-controlled players who often farm gold with no (or little) human intervention. The 'botter' programmes the bots' instructions and they carry out this list of commands. (i.e. killing monsters and retrieving loot)
Bots and so-called 'Asian gold-farmers' are different because the gold-farmers are humans, usually from the Far East who farm gold and sell it for real money. Both of the above are against the EULA and will result in a ban, temporary or permanent (altough more likely to be permanent). |

In its simplest form a "bot" (short for "software robot") is a program which sends a pre-recorded sequence of keypresses & mouse movements (called a "script") to the game client. Often the script will loop endlessly - e.g. leave town, run to spot, kill monsters, take drops, map back to town, unload loot, leave town, run to spot....
This type of bot is easy to make. You could make one yourself, with shareware software. It is also easy to detect for ANet, who have their own bots looking for this type of repetitive action, and ANet *will* revoke your account if you're found botting, making the game you spent $40 to buy a beercoaster. So don't. More advanced bots are considerably harder to make and considerably harder to detect. |

Elona reach International District 1 has a lot of Mo/W bots because the environment is simple with minotaurs, no degeneration and no enchantment removal.

Oh, and while bots and asian gold farmers are indeed different, asian gold farmers (who are humans) often use bots. Each farmer will typically oversee several computers, each running bots. The job of the farmer is to restart any script which gets stuck/bugs out, and to respond to whispers/join requests (which could be from an in-game moderator).
